The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena is the parish seat of Casamicciola Terme. It is located a few meters from the nearby Piazza Maio and is characterized by a large beautiful garden at the front.
The building is fairly new, it was built after the devastating earthquake of 1883 which completely destroyed Casamicciola.
On the same place existed since the fourteenth century a small church dedicated to San Severino which was expanded in 1540 through the initiative of the pastor Bartholomew Monti.
The earthquake had its epicenter close to Piazza Maio and stood only the church tower. After a few years, he began the renovation and opening of the Parish of Santa Maria Maddalena, took place on May 31, 1896.
From an architectural point of view, the facade of the church, which can be reached after a small staircase, is divided into three parts by slender pilasters.
The church, a basilica, has three naves. To the left there is the grave of the priest Giuseppe Morgera (the one that the reconstruction of the church) would strongly. On both sides there are a series of six altars. The marble baptismal font comes instead from the old church. Following on the first altar there is a wooden statue of S.Giovan Giuseppe della Croce, on the second a wooden crucifix. In the area of the transept, there are a couple of altars from the destroyed temple. On the altars there is a pair of nineteenth century paintings, coming from the old church, that is: an Assumption and a Pieta. On the left transept, there is a Magdalen half-length of 1730. The main altar is from the old destroyed church.
In the sacristy you can admire three sculptures of St. Anne, Saint Lucia and Saint Michael, and a painting of the Madonna and Child with Saints.
Finally, there are in the Church, a wooden sculpture of St. Emidio, the tomb of Monsignor Carlo Mennella, and a Trinity.
